In modern dance, students learn a combination of physical, artistic, and expressive skills. Here’s a breakdown of what is typically learned:


1. Body Awareness and Control

  • Understanding how the body moves through space.
  • Developing strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance.
  • Learning to isolate and articulate different parts of the body.

2. Movement Techniques

  • Core modern dance techniques (e.g., Graham, Horton, Cunningham, Limón).
  • Use of gravity, fall and recovery, contraction and release, and floor work.
  • Improvisation and spontaneous movement.

3. Expressive Skills

  • Using movement to communicate emotions, ideas, or narratives.
  • Developing a personal movement style or voice.
  • Performing with intention, presence, and energy.

4. Creativity and Choreography

  • Creating original movement sequences.
  • Exploring musicality, dynamics, and spatial patterns.
  • Collaborating with others to develop dance pieces.
