BMIT STEAM ARTS

Hip Hop

In hip hop dance, learners acquire a combination of physical skills, creative expression, and cultural knowledge. Here’s a breakdown of what is learned:

1. Foundational Movements

  • Basic steps: These include moves like the two-step, body roll, bounce, rock, and groove.
  • Styles within hip hop: Dancers often explore styles like breaking, locking, popping, and krumping—each with its own techniques and history.

2. Musicality

  • Learning to move in sync with the beat, rhythms, and lyrics.
  • Understanding different musical elements like tempo, timing, and accents.

3. Coordination and Control

  • Developing body awareness, balance, and isolation (moving one part of the body independently of others).
  • Building strength, flexibility, and endurance.

4. Performance and Expression

  • Using dance to express emotion, character, and story.
  • Building confidence and stage presence through freestyle and choreography.

5. Freestyling and Improvisation

  • Creating spontaneous movements to music.
  • Encouraging individuality, creativity, and personal style.

6. Choreography

  • Learning and memorizing routines.
  • Understanding formations, transitions, and group dynamics.

7. Cultural Knowledge and Respect

  • Understanding hip hop’s roots in African American and Latino communities of the Bronx, NYC in the 1970s.
  • Respecting the culture, history, and pioneers of the hip hop movement.

8. Teamwork and Social Skills

  • Collaborating in crews or groups.
  • Participating in battles, cyphers, and performances that build community and mutual respect.
